Gary Walker

How long have you been riding (or have ridden), and how old are you now?
I am 64 years old, and I have been riding since I was 12.

How did you get started riding / racing?
My dad introduced riding to me in 1970 or 1971.  He bought a dirt bike, and I started going with him to enduros.  I started racing when I was 16, and got a motorcycle license then so I could ride the enduros.

How long have you been or were an expert?
I made it to AA in the enduro series, and then John Bosch and Ned Munier convinced me to switch over to motocross in the mid-80's.  I was into it, and I owned my own Husqvarna shop in the mid-80s in Fairport, where Nyles Trailers used to be.  I was only in business for a couple years, as it was a difficult business being dirt bike oriented.

All-time favorite bike?
My 2000 Honda CR250.  It is easy to ride, and I am very comfortable on it.

What was your first motorcycle?
A Bronco 50 minibike.

What is your favorite music?
I really don't have a favorite.  I listen to all different music; top-40, easy listening, and rock.

What is your favorite food?
BBQ spareribs.  I usually get this on my special days, like my birthday.

How do you (or did you) train for motocross?
I never trained other than riding, until I was into it for quite a while.  Going to the gym became a big advantage, and I still go to the gym on a regular basis.

What motivates you?
You guys!  All of you that are younger than me. And that I can still ride at the pace I do!

Occupation?
Automotive technician at Gerber Honda.

Other interests?
I like travel, and I like cars.  I work on cars quite a bit.

Greatest accomplishment?
Achieving AA status in the enduro series, and I also raced the Baja 1000.  Most people will never get this opportunity.  I tried to achieve expert status in motocross, but after several bad injuries, I now just go out and have fun and try not to hurt myself.

Any regrets?
I can't think of any.  When I heard I got nominated, it made me reflect on the past.  I have done an awful lot of stuff that most people never get to do; motocross, hare scrambles, enduros, Baja, being involved with the PRA, WNY motocross stuff, and being involved in the sport when I can.

Who are your heroes?
My kids.  I can't get over the stuff they do and their accomplishments!

What's the best part about racing motocross?
The camaraderie! The people involved are some of the better people I have met.  The kids and I have developed some amazing relationships with the people who race mx.

What would you change about our sport/district?
I'm satisfied with the way things are, as far as I can see.  Our district does an outstanding job in the motocross community, in my opinion.

Who are (were) your sponsors?
Dynoport was my sponsor at one time. I worked for them at the races, as a vendor, like 7-S.  They were my supplier for parts and accessories.

Who would you like to thank?
My wife, Dawn. She has made a lot of sacrifices for my interests ever since she has known me.

Last words?
I want to thank the motocross community for all they have given me and my family.
